Sustainable Living

Imagine living in a house bathed in sunshine that is cozy in the winter and cool in the summer.  Read a book during the day without artificial lights.  Clean, fresh air always flows through the house.  Plants grow heartily, purifying the air.  Your kitchen is the finest one can find with eco-conscience cabinetry and all the best appliances.  Your car emits no pollution and the energy to power it will always be less expensive than gasoline.  And your water, harvested from rain, snow and dew, is soft and wonderful.

It seems like a dream.  Luxurious, sustainable living that preserves a future for our children.  But it is not a dream.  Equinox House is the reality that solar powered living exists and is affordable today.

The technologies behind Equinox House are complex, but living in Equinox House is not.  You are in command of your living environment, waking up each day with the sun providing your living and transportation needs.

The information that follows has been assembled to guide you through the elements of design and construction of Equinox House.  Follow our archival blog that details construction of Equinox House.  Take a video tour of Equinox House to learn about its features.  Read our publication and presentation materials describing the technology and performance of Equinox House.

And, most importantly, believe that sustainable living is available and affordable now.  We can do it together, creating a healthy future for ourselves and our children.

“Our tools are better than we are, and grow better faster than we do. They suffice to crack the atom, to command the tides. But they do not suffice for the oldest task in human history: to live on a piece of land without spoiling it.”
-Professor Aldo Leopold; 1938 University of Wisconsin Engineering and Conservation speech
