What’s the big deal about a metal roof? It costs more than asphalt shingles and in many regions such as ours, it’s difficult to find someone to install a metal roof on a residence.
The primary reasons for using a metal roof are the following:
1) The roof has a 50 year warranty compared to the usual 20 year warranty of an asphalt shingle roof.
2) The metal roof is recycled at the end of its lifetime, which means you will get paid for it by a metal scrapyard while the 2 to 3 asphalt shingle roofs installed over 50 years are not recyclable and will cost you to landfill.
3) Metal roofs provide fire protection to a house while asphalt roofs add fuel to a fire.
4) White metal roofs reflect the summer sun off of the house and can reflect winter sunlight into the house if the overhangs, rooflines and windows are properly designed.
5) Metal roofs keep rainwater cleaner for harvesting.
There are probably more good reasons, but overall, a metal roof has a higher first cost, but a lower lifetime cost. It makes good economic sense.
