Newell Instruments, Inc.
Newell Instruments, Inc was founded in 1997 in Urbana, Illinois.  The company’s primary work revolved around
customized electronic concentration sensors using a patented technology licensed from the University of Illinois.
Since then, Newell Instruments has greatly expanded it activities, but continues to develop and manufacture
electronic concentration sensors for refrigeration and air conditioning industry research.

Newell Instruments expertise spans energy conversion, air conditioning, refrigeration, heat transfer, fluid
mechanics, controls and instrumentation, solar energy, and building technology that has resulted in a broad range
of project activities and clients.

Projects include investigations of high performance enhanced heat transfer surfaces; design, simulation and
prototype testing of novel processes and systems; and energy and performance assessment of existing
products.  Newell Instruments’ familiarity with many industries allows us to provide our clients with unique ideas
and perspectives to assess and improve their products.

Who are our clients?  Maintaining confidentiality and protecting their IP is an essential aspect of our work.  We
work with multinational corporations whose products you use everyday as well as small consulting firms to solve a
single problem.  Overall our goal is to create solutions that improve the quality of life, while reducing our impact on
the world.
About Us
Personnel
Ben Newell, President
BS (Univ of Illinois) in Mechanical Engineering, MBA (Univ of Illinois)
Professional Engineer Intern; Illinois

Ben began at Newell Instruments immediately after graduating from the UI, growing the company’s activities
from the basement of his parents’ house to a laboratory at the technology park at the University of Illinois, and
now at Newell Instruments’ 4400 ft2 laboratory facility on the east side of Urbana.  Ben is an avid runner and
marathoner.  He serves on an advisory board for the local Habitat for Humanity, and is a mentor at a local
elementary school.

Ty Newell, Vice President
BS (Univ of Michigan), MS (Univ of Utah), and PhD (Univ of Utah) in Mechanical Engineering
Professional Engineer registration; Illinois

Ty was an engineer with Dupont at a manufacturing plant after finishing his BS degree in 1974.  His graduate
degree research investigated solar energy systems for residential and industrial process applications.  After
completion of his PhD in 1980, Ty joined the Mechanical Engineering faculty at the University of Illinois,
retiring as an Assistant Dean of Engineering in 2007.  His academic research concentrated on energy
systems and resource conservation, Ty was a board member for many years with the Community Recycling
Center, a national award winning not-for-profit corporation that pioneered many material collection and
recycling systems.  He also designed and constructed the 20,000 ft2 University of Illinois salt gradient solar
pond, the largest solar energy thermal collection system in Illinois.

Alexander Long, Mechanical/Controls Engineer
BS (Univ of Illinois) in Mechanical Engineering

Alex started as a summer intern at Newell Instruments in 2008 and has been on board full time since his
graduation in Dec of '08.  He has an interest in and a lot of experience in robotic control and computer
programming.  He has put in  a lot of time expanding his control knowledge to include refrigeration and air
conditioning system controls.  When not working, you can find Alex weight lifting or brewing beer.

Mbikayi Nsumuna, Mechanical Engineer
BS (North Carolina A&T) and MS (Univ of Illinois) in Mechanical Engineering

Mbikayi began his time at Newell Instruments as a part time intern while completing his masters degree.  He
has been working full time since then.  As he has become more familiar with refrigeration and air
conditioning systems, Mbikayi has taken an active role in system computer simulation modeling and testing.
He is a native of Zaire and a huge soccer fan.  You will most likely find him on the pitch either playing,
coaching, or watching a soccer match.
